How does the AI background removal work?
Chitrax uses an ISNet neural network model running entirely in your browser via WebAssembly and ONNX Runtime. The AI segments the foreground subject from the background without sending your image to any server.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. Your image is processed 100% locally in your browser's memory. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted. Closing the tab immediately clears all data.
Why does it take longer the first time?
On first use, the AI model (~7.5MB or ~35MB depending on mode) downloads and caches in your browser. Subsequent uses load instantly from the local cache.
What image formats are supported?
JPG, PNG, and WebP files up to 50MB. The output is always a transparent PNG file.
Can I choose a custom background color?
Yes. After background removal, you can select transparent output or apply any solid color of your choice.
Does it work offline?
After the initial model download, the tool works entirely offline since the AI model is cached in your browser.
